The Universal Church in Ireland promotes social action in awareness for breast cancer prevention
For many, October is merely the tenth month of the year, yet the month is also wildly known as “Pink October” – a way to remember and promote breast cancer prevention worldwide. It is not for nothing as breast cancer is the type of disease that mostly affects women.
In 2020 alone, there were about 2.3 million new cases of breast cancer in the world.
According to Breast Cancer Institute (BCI), it is estimated that, per year, more than 3,000 women are diagnosed with the disease and 690 are fatal. This shocking number motivated the Universal Church in Ireland to volunteer in supporting patients and families facing a daily struggle against cancer at The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital.
At the event held last Sunday (31 October), patients, families, nurses and employees were presented with a kit containing chocolates and a Godllywood agenda.
“The agenda has messages aimed at women’s needs and challenges that will motivate them to overcome their daily battles,” said volunteer Tshego Sheehan.
The project volunteers witnessed the joy of patients and staff when receiving attention and affection through a simple gesture, but with extremely valuable content.
“For me, it was very important to pass on to each one of them the love and hope that everything will be all right”, shared Andreia Aquiles, another volunteer.
Sheila Bispo, who has been part of the Universal Church’s solidarity actions for six (6) years, also says that she was happy with the receptivity of the employees. “They expressed how difficult it is to deal with the pain of those who suffer from the disease and many of them are without a family member or friend around,” she described.
The Universal Church in Ireland is at hand to provide spiritual and emotional support to anyone who needs help.
