It is widely known that reading brings numerous benefits to the mind and contributes to the development of human intellect. Among the vast array of literary works on diverse subjects and styles, one book stands out for its profound impact: the Bible. Despite being written thousands of years ago, it remains relevant today.
In its 66 books, the Holy Scriptures contains stories of faith, spirituality, adventure, and even poetry. However, their significance extends beyond mere historical narratives. A study conducted by the Center for Bible Engagement in 2012, which involved over 100,000 participants from 20 different countries, revealed that reading the Bible four or more times a week can significantly reduce feelings of loneliness by 30%, anger issues by 31%, and the desire to consume excessive alcohol by 62%.
Reading the Bible fosters peace, joy, and a strong connection with God. Nonetheless, simply “reading” the Scriptures is not enough. It is essential to meditate on God’s teachings and apply them as a guide in our daily lives. In his personal commentary on the Holy Bible, Bishop Edir Macedo explains, “The Bible is a Divine Encyclopaedia, where each book highlights the perfect will of God for all areas of human life. The Texts from both Old and New Testaments are trustworthy and contain the secret to a happy and successful life” (commentary on 2 Timothy 3.16).
In his commentary on Joshua 1:8, the Bishop further states, “Having your mind immersed in the Word keeps faith alive and protected from doubts.” In this spirit, as 2025 begins, we are taking part in a 40-day purpose called “It is Written,” during which we will meditate on 40 different Bible passages determining that, through His word, we will be empowered to overcome any challenges and protect our faith throughout this new year.
If you would like to join this special purpose, visit your nearest Universal Church and speak with the pastor for more information. You can receive a free bookmark (subject to availability) that will help guide you through your meditation. Let’s begin 2025 by focusing our minds on the Word of God.
